WORKSOP earned the bragging rights over Retford for the first time in many seasons on Saturday, by beating their local rivals in a hard-fought encounter at Stubbing Lane.
Worksop 24
East Retford 17
The hosts started strongly with some great early forward pressure, which allowed P. Roome to crash over for his fifth try of the season.
It wasn't long before Worksop were on the scoresheet again, captain K. McGuire breaking down the left wing and smashing through two tackles to score in the corner.
Worksop relaxed, allowing Retford to gain in confidence and put them under pressure.
However, nothing came of it and the first half ended with Worksop 12-0 up.
From the restart the visitors got on the scoresheet, when their big flanker crashed over under the posts.
Worksop knew they were in for a long, hard 40 minutes, but only minutes after this score, A. Waddell intercepted a loose kick and raced in under the posts.
Next to score for the home side was C. Barnett, who rounded off a slick move to give Worksop to a 24-7 lead.
This try only seemed to spur Retford on and they scored two late trys to make it a nail-biting finish.
Worksop managed to hold on to the final whistle through some great defence from L. Beard and D. Bowskill, who both made some crunching tackles.
