PUBLIC services across Bassetlaw have come to a standstill today as workers take industrial action over pay.
Schools, leisure centres and libraries are just some of the places which will be closed today and tomorrow as members of the union UNISON take part in the national strike.

Keith Circuit, who is UNISON branch secretary within Bassetlaw Council and A1 Housing, has been manning the picket lines outside Retford Town Hall and Worksop's Queen's Buildings.

"We've had about 95 per cent of our members out on strike today," he said.

"I would say over 500 people have stayed at home and this reflects just how strongly they feel about this issue."

"We're very pleased with the response and understand that there is a similar story at branches in the surrounding area."

Across the UK, UNISON are asking for a six per cent or 50 pence an hour increase in pay - whichever is greater.

Mr Circuit told the Guardian last week that by offering a 2.45 per cent pay rise, which is below the level of inflation, they were effectively asking workers to take a 'pay cut'.
