RESIDENTS in Blyth were treated to a weekend of fun and activities at the village's first ever festival.
Swarms of people flocked to the school fete held at St Mary and St Martin's Primary on Saturday 28th June to take part in activities like Maypole dancing and a hat parade.

"It was not just for the children, it was for adults too and everyone had a fantastic time," said Gill Riley, 39, who is a member of the village committee who arranged the events.

There was also a village fete held at the school the very next day, and residents were treated to an entertaining dog show, ferret racing and a classic car display, which included vintage Morgan vehicles.

Also on the Saturday was Blyth Flower Festival, which was held at Blyth Parish Church. Horticulture lovers could view an array of beautiful flowers lovingly grown by local people.

"The whole weekend was brilliant - even though it rained quite a bit, lots of people still showed up. I would like to thank everyone for their support in making the event a real success," said Mrs Riley, of Bawtry Road, Blyth.

Over £5,000 was raised from the events, which will be split between the school and the church. And organisers say that after the success of this year, they hope to repeat the events again in 2009.
